Marelaan 1, Oegstgeest
Attention all garden lovers - detached villa on one of the largest plots of old Oegstgeest
If you live in Oegstgeest, you are likely to have noticed this house. A distinctive, detached, rural residence with wooden shutters, lead curls on the stained-glass windows, doors that seem hundreds of years old ... what construction period would that house belong to?
The answer is as surprising as it is interesting: the house was built in 1938/1939 by order of L.P.H. Haaksma, and the architect was H.J. Jesse. Correct, ... that Jesse. But we all know him from those stately mansions along the Rijnsburgerweg and many other locations in Leiden. This house looks nothing like what we know from Jesse. What happens to be the case? Both Haaksma and Jesse were fervent collectors of historical (building) materials. Both gentlemen have incorporated as many special and unique elements in this house as possible. The pictures speak for themselves.
The current owners bought this beautiful property in 2010. It was fairly dark and very outdated at the time. Over the years, they have beautifully rebuilt and expanded this house, resulting in the creation of a very successful combination of 'old and new’, both modern and distinctive. The special and unique elements have, of course, been preserved. However, thanks to the smart extensions and the necessary internal renovations, the house is now light and spacious and there is an optimal connection with the fantastic spacious and sunny garden. The current living area amounts to approx. 250 m2.
The house offers, among other things, a very spacious living and dining room, a modern semi-open kitchen, a (wine-) cellar and an outbuilding which is connected to the kitchen by a glass corridor. That outbuilding is the ideal 'family room' or home office. You will find a total of 5 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms and a storage attic on the different levels. There is on-site parking space for several cars outside, a roofed bicycle shed, a wooden garden shed for storage purposes and a beautiful veranda/outdoor kitchen located at the back of the garden. The full entity is contemporary and in excellent condition.
All in all, this is a unique object by Oegstgeester standards; definitely worth your visit.
